Midtrack (MS-DOS MIDI Tracker)

What is Midtrack?

Quite a few years ago, I wrote a MIDI tracker for MS-DOS. Compared to modern music software (and even other trackers of the time) it is very primitive, but it works fairly well.

I’d originally written it so I could use the Yamaha XG sound set of my sound card at the time (hence it has a program list for General MIDI or Yamaha XG.) Recently I’ve acquired some other MIDI equipment and intend to develop this further so I can use it with that – in the process, taking care of some outstanding bugs and tweaking it cosmetically.

At some point I may port it to Windows and/or Linux, but for now it is DOS only (I test it in DOSBox.) With the increased interest in retro-computing, and enthusiasts making games for old platforms etc. I’m hoping this will be useful to someone.

It uses its own file format, but can export to .MID files. There is no way to define your own patch lists or assign MIDI controller numbers.

System Requirements

Midtrack is designed to run under MS-DOS 6 or DOSBox. It might run inside Windows 9x/ME (this is how I used to use it) but most likely will not work under any other version of Windows.

Systems with a Pentium I processor and 8 MB RAM should be adequate to run it. The song memory code was originally designed very lazily, hence it is pretty bloated for such a simple program!

License

Midtrack is freeware. Use it on as many computers as you like, and share it with anyone you wish to.

Changes in version 2.1

Detailed information about the changes is covered in the Release Notes (relnotes.txt) included in the download. Here is a summary:

The program has been renamed to “Midtrack”.

Significant bugs have been addressed, including one that made songs play at a slow, irregular speed. The causes of several crashes have been fixed. Available disk drives are now displayed correctly in the file dialogs.

Cosmetic changes have been made across the whole program. These include wording improvements and adjustments to the positioning and layout of different things.
